The global analytical instrumentation market covering areas of chromatography, spectroscopy, gas analyzers, liquid analyzers, material testing, surface science techniques, life science systems, mass spectrometry, x-ray instrumentation and informatics has witnessed several mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships over the years that has paved the way for vendor growth and in-turn increase in market size. This article highlights some of the deals that helped parent companies accomplish growth.

Sciex

In June 2015, Sciex and Metabolon,Inc collaborated to launch the Lipidyzer Platform that was expected to be a game changing solution as it offered rapid quantitation of thousands of lipids and this platform signals the arrival of next-generation lipidomics. The platform was the first integrated solutions for rapid lipid profiling for advanced lipidomics research. AB Sciex and Advaita Bioinformatics entered into a co-marketing deal in September 2015 to produce advanced applications which can interpret next generation proteomics results based on SWATH Acquisition. With this, Sciex customers gained access to Advaita’s iPathwayGuide by which they got the power to interpret next generation proteomics data based on SWATH Acquisition. In the same year, SCIEX collaborated with Paulovich Lab to commercialize the Immuno-MRM assays, which was developed in the Paulovich lab. This way, SCIEX was able to extend its leadership in the Targeted Proteomics field by offering complete solutions for researchers in the academic and pharmaceuticals sectors.

Agilent

In November 2015, Agilent Technologies Inc. acquired Seahorse Bioscience for $235 million in cash. Seahorse Bioscience specializes in providing instruments and assay kits for use in measurement of cell metabolism. Through this deal, Agilent strengthened its Separation and Mass Spectrometry Solutions presence in the Pharmaceuticals and Life Science markets. The platform combination gives worldwide researchers an opportunity for the complete analysis of the disease mechanism affecting the human beings.

Thermo

Thermo Fisher acquired Life Technologies Corporation that paved the way to become a leader in life science instrumentation market. Through this acquisition, Thermo was able to expand its business in business in consumables for genomics, and molecular and cell biology. This enabled Thermo to focus on its key growth strategy involving technological innovation, a unique customer value proposition and expansion in emerging markets.

Waters

In July 2014, Waters Corporation acquired Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) from MediMass Ltd. REIMS is a key enabling technology for “iknife”, which is a device that can be used in the operating room for real time diagnostics. This technology acquisition strengthens Water’s presence in the Health Science sector.

Analytik Jena

In September 2014, Analytik Jena AG acquired the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry business from Bruker Corporation. The company thus became one among the few suppliers to launch all three core technologies for elemental trace analysis. With this acquisition, Analytik Jena AG was able to get access to the ICP MS installed base and thus expand its sales presence in the environmental testing sector.
Emerson

In 2014, Emerson acquired Cascade Technologies Ltd, a manufacturer of gas analyzers based on Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) technology. This acquisition has helped Emerson expand its capabilities in the process analytical space. This has also enabled the company to serve a variety of industries, including automotive and marine, with long-term strategic business partnerships.

While these are some of the acquisitions Frost has noticed during research, there are more potential for opportunities for mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
